The 5 most common interior design mistakes (and how to avoid them)

De 5 meest gemaakte fouten bij interieurinrichting (en hoe jij ze voorkomt)

Creating a stylish interior sometimes seems easier than it actually is. You see beautiful examples on Pinterest or Instagram, but in practice, it proves more difficult to make the right choices. At Rive Home, we guide clients daily in furnishing their homes and we often see the same pitfalls. In this blog, we share the 5 most common mistakes – and of course, how to avoid them.

1. Not creating a clear plan

Many people start enthusiastically buying furniture or painting walls without an overall plan. The result: individual elements that do not go together.
Solution: always start with an interior plan. Think about the layout, colors, and materials so that everything becomes cohesive.

2. Mixing too many different styles

A little contrast can be nice, but mixing too many styles creates clutter. For example, a modern sofa next to a rustic cupboard with an industrial lamp above it.
Solution: choose one primary style (e.g., modern or Scandinavian) and add a few accents for character.

3. Incorrect use of lighting

Lighting is often forgotten or chosen last. As a result, you miss out on atmosphere and functionality.
Solution: create a lighting plan beforehand with ambient, mood, and functional lighting. This immediately elevates your interior to a higher level.

4. Furniture that is too small or too large

A sofa that is too small for a large living room, or a huge cabinet in a small space: this disrupts the balance.
Solution: measure your space carefully and choose furniture in proportion. Custom work is often the ideal solution here.

5. Forgetting to add personality

An interior can certainly draw inspiration from trends, but it should also tell your story. Without personal elements, it quickly feels cold and impersonal.
Solution: add photos, art, souvenirs, or unique custom-made pieces that truly make your home your own.
