Interior of De Citadel Utrecht: spacious areas with a human scale
A large apartment does not have to feel like an open hall. We design recognizable areas for cooking, entertaining, working, and resting, with space between the furniture and cohesion in the whole.
More space does not automatically require more furniture. The challenge lies in dividing a spacious home effectively without losing its openness. For De Citadel, we investigate how your lifestyle, the shape of the floor plan, and personal pieces can enhance one another.
De Citadel in De Nieuwe Defensie in Utrecht comprises various apartments and a penthouse. The project schedule lists the second half of 2028 as the expected completion date. Property sizes and room layouts vary significantly. Therefore, we work with your specific unit number rather than the largest home as a general representation of the project.

Dividing a large living space without closing it off
We begin with the areas you truly use: a dining table for daily life, a seating area for conversation, and perhaps a quiet reading corner. Rugs, lighting, and furniture placement can distinguish these functions. Not every corner needs to be filled; free space can actually help one understand the layout.
The route from the entrance to the kitchen, balcony, and bedrooms is mapped out simultaneously. A second seating area has little value if it blocks the logical flow of movement. We also consider reception and privacy: where do guests hang their coats, and which areas should remain comfortably out of sight?
Scale, storage, and a cohesive palette
A wall unit can combine multiple functions: books, tableware, technology, and a space for art. The contents determine the depth and layout. We ensure a long cabinet is not designed simply to fill an empty wall. Accessibility, door openings, and equipment ventilation are all taken into account.
Materials may connect large surfaces but do not need to be identical everywhere. We compare the kitchen front with the floor, and the countertop with the dining table. An accent can provide direction to a space; conversely, various striking materials require calm in between. With your designer, you will test the combination in the showroom using real samples.
Do not order finishing and technical aspects separately
When your home has multiple bathrooms or extra features, we examine what the project developer is supplying for each space. Piping, light points, and connections are not free variables. Desired changes are first technically confirmed. Only then can the kitchen, custom furniture, and lighting be developed into a viable execution package.
The budget distinguishes between fixed furnishings, interior finishing, and furniture. You see which choices have the most impact and what can be phased. Installation is coordinated with measurements, building access, and the confirmed completion date. This turns an ambitious interior into a series of controllable decisions.
Where can we begin?
- The drawings and technical specifications of your specific unit.
- Your requirements for guests, work, and privacy.
- A selection of existing furniture and art that will move with you.
- The selected construction options and the budget for additional furnishings.

Questions about your interior in De Citadel
Do you only design for the large penthouses?
No. The approach is tailored to your own apartment, living requirements, and budget. A smaller home requires different choices, not less attention.
How do I prevent a large living room from feeling empty or cluttered?
We design living zones and walkways to scale. Furniture, lighting, and textiles take on a function together; adding extra furniture is not necessarily the solution.
What do you need for an implementation proposal?
A detailed design, the confirmed delivery specification, and technical prerequisites. After that, we can provide insight into the agreed-upon work, suppliers, schedule, and costs.
