Rive Home / Lighting plan & budget

Costs of a lighting plan for an entire home

The cost of a lighting plan depends on the rooms and the level of detail you require. Consider the design, the fixtures, the installation, and the finishing separately. A fee for the drawing alone is not a total budget for your home's lighting.

Ask what you are getting for the price first

A consultation regarding existing lamps is a different assignment than a fully developed lighting plan for multiple floors. Similarly, a floor plan with light positions differs from a plan with selected fixtures and coordination with custom work. Therefore, compare quotes based on content, not just the final price.

Rive Home discusses the lighting needs in conjunction with your interior and details the agreed-upon services in a project quote. The fee is determined based on your specific assignment. For this reason, you will not find a general starting price on this page, as it may not fit your home.

Four components of the lighting budget

Ensure these items are clearly identifiable. They do not all need to be offered by the same party, but their mutual connection must be clear.

1. Design and advice

Discussing your requirements, lighting positions, a fixture proposal, and the agreed-upon development. Ask which drawings you will receive, how many discussions are included, and how adjustments are handled.

2. Fixtures and controls

The lamps themselves, any individual light sources, drivers, and control components. Check whether a product is offered as a complete unit. An attractive fixture price does not reveal the cost of the entire combination.

3. Technical installation

Adjusting or installing connections, wiring, assembly, and inspection. An interior lighting plan does not automatically replace the technical development by an installer. Clearly establish who is responsible for this.

4. Architectural finishing

Any changes to ceilings, walls, and custom work, plus repairs and painting. These specific tasks may fall outside a quote for lamps or design.

Which choices determine the design price?

  • Number of rooms and usage: an open living space with a kitchen, dining table, and seating area involves multiple lighting requirements.
  • Level of detail: directional advice requires different tasks than a product-specific plan with connection details.
  • Available information: reliable drawings and a clear furniture layout help to define the scope of the assignment.
  • Freedom of choice during construction: existing connections, ceiling construction, and custom work determine what needs to be investigated.
  • Coordination and changes: establish which contacts with builders, installers, or interior contractors, and which revisions are included.

Therefore, the number of square meters alone is insufficient to equate two assignments. A small bathroom with a mirror, recessed lighting, and custom work may require a different approach than a larger room with existing lamps.

An example: light in a custom cabinet

The visible light line is only part of the decision. In the quote, you also want to know who determines the technical combination, where the power supply is located, how it remains accessible, and who handles the connection. The cabinet, lighting, and installation must be coordinated before any parts are ordered.

In the interior design for Project Aerdenhout from 2026, you can see how material surfaces, cabinets, and fixtures define the interior together. Rive Home created this design for a private client. It serves as a reference for the coherence of the design, not for a fixed lighting budget.

New construction or existing home: different cost items

For new construction, it is important to know which connections are provided as standard and what counts as additional work. Ask when changes must be submitted by at the latest. A design fee and the builder's additional work are different costs.

For a renovation, the existing installation and finishes are factors. Investigate what can be kept and what needs to be adjusted. Include the cost of repairing an opened ceiling or a relocated connection in the budget.

Without demolition work, the assignment can be limited to existing connections and additional lighting. That is a different scope, and not a guarantee that every desired lighting effect is achievable.

Checklist for comparing lighting plan quotes

  1. Are the same rooms and the same premises included in both quotes?
  2. Are the drawings, product choices, and level of detail specified?
  3. Is it clear how many meetings and correction rounds are included?
  4. Are lamps, light sources, drivers, and controls separately identifiable?
  5. Who checks technical suitability and handles the installation?
  6. Are coordination, potential site visits, and implementation supervision included or excluded?
  7. Are VAT, assembly, repair work, and any other costs clearly stated?
  8. How are changes and additional work discussed and confirmed in advance?

Present unclear items to the provider before agreeing. With a limited budget, it helps to first determine the necessary functions and connections and then discuss which product choices or rooms can follow at a later stage.

Frequently asked questions about costs

Are the lamps included with the lighting plan?

Not automatically. The design, the products, and the installation are separate components. Have the quote specify which of these you are purchasing and who is supplying them.

Is a free lighting plan comparable to paid advice?

That depends on the terms and content. For a free proposal, ask if there is a purchase obligation, which assortment is being chosen from, and what drawings and adjustments you will receive. The label "free" in itself does not indicate how complete the plan is.

Can I reduce costs by keeping existing lamps?

Reusing them can limit the purchase of new products. Whether the lamps are usable depends on their function, condition, connection, and the new layout. Provide product details and photos before the proposal is developed.

What does Rive Home need for a targeted quote?

A floor plan with dimensions, the rooms you want to include, your furniture layout as far as known, photos, and your schedule. Indicate whether you are modifying an existing home or preparing new construction, and whether you are looking for lighting advice only or a broader interior design.

A quote tailored to your lighting requirements

Please send your floor plan, the number of rooms, your requirements, and the construction schedule. Also, specify which lamps you wish to keep and whether you are only seeking advice or would like to include lighting in an interior design project.
